BASED ON GATHERING is an initiative centering collective care as a form and foundation of artistic practice.
Gathering 2: A variety of meals were served and shared on Tara Hariri's SOFREH, a traditional persian tablecloth that is usually spread out on a carpet – in this case on the carpet created in Leipzig. Gathering and eating together is a deeply rooted ritual that creates identity and strengthens bonds. Preparing, serving and sharing food creates intimate spaces for exchange. It is important that everyone has enough and that no one is excluded; it creates a sense of belonging and respect within the community.
We opened the event by reading excerpts from Le Guin's The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction (1986), which provided the conceptual framework for a collective walk through the park. Inspired by the text, we gathered whatever spoke to us—
objects, images, impressions, fragments. These findings were later exchanged in conversation and over a shared meal. The day came to a close with a site-specific DJ set by Tamara Wirth, creating a space for quiet resonance and collective presence.
To collect is to connect. Gathering as resistance.
